Description
Found only in high elevations in the Virunga volcanic range and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the Mountain Gorillas are certainly not one of the easiest primates to locate. But conservation efforts involving eco-tourism has not only made this possible, it has also brought this species back from the brink of extinction.
This imposing character is the dominant silverback of a group residing in the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda. Towering at over 12,000 feet, Mount Mgahinga was shrouded in mist when we ascended. This wet and lush cloud forest is the home to the Nyakagezi family. Despite weighing nearly 200kg (over 400 pounds), this impressive silverback was a gentle giant. The exhilaration I felt when the mighty ape brushed past me is something that is both difficult to describe and forget.
This is one of a set of three prints entitled “Primates”, where the proceeds support the conservation of this species and other primates.
